The team plays as a unit: figure-of-eight rotations, off-ball screens, overloaded counters and a pivot who turns his marker.
The 2D engine has learned to play together. In a 4-0 the runs curve and cross in a figure-of-eight rotation, and a player without the ball can set a screen to free a teammate. The defence reacts, switching marks based on the players' reading of the play or your instruction.
There are new instructions on the tactics screen and during the match: play through the pivot, rotations, counter-attacks, 5v4 attacking (M or U shape) and 5v4 defending (square or diamond). And four new set pieces, from a double screen to a corner with a shot from deep.
Technique matters too. A pivot with his back to goal can spin his marker, shots can be toe-pokes or chips over an advanced keeper, won dribbles become sole drags and elásticos, and a keeper who is good off his line spreads into an X in one-on-ones.
Press conferences that remember the season
Journalists ask about what matters right now: the derby, the crisis, the promise you made last week.
Press conferences now grow out of the season's story. Each fictional journalist has an outlet and a style, and the questions change with the moment: a derby coming up, the board's patience, a youngster's debut, a long trip.
What you say is on the record. Guarantee a win and you will be asked about it after the match, provoke a rival and the papers answer back, dodge a question and they keep pushing.
Afterwards you see the mood in the room, tomorrow's headlines and the effect on the dressing room, the fans and the board.
A calendar for pre-season
Training camp, friendlies and free days in one calendar, with a plan suggested by your assistant.
Pre-season now has a week-by-week planner: competitive matches, friendlies, training camp and free days. Pick a free day to book it, with the opponents available that day and those of a similar level highlighted.
Your assistant suggests a plan before anything is booked: training camp in week two and three spaced-out friendlies up to a week before the first competitive match.
Friendlies can also fit into the season, in the breaks between fixtures. If a competitive match is later scheduled close by, the friendly is cancelled and your assistant lets you know.
Injuries mid-match: the coach decides
When a player gets hurt, the game stops and asks: does he play on at less than full fitness, or come off as a precaution?
Before, an injury took the player out of the match without asking. Now a notice shows the type of injury and the expected time out.
If it is minor, you can keep him in the rotation: he loses some physical output and risks making it worse. Take him off as a precaution and the lay-off is shorter.
If he cannot carry on, the notice says so and play continues. The decision goes into the player’s medical history.
Goalkeepers who backpedal facing play
Goalkeepers now read the move: they line up between ball and goal, come for crosses and drop back without turning away from the ball.
In futsal the goalkeeper is almost a fifth outfield player. In the power play he brings the ball up; when the team defends, he has to cut the angle without losing sight of the ball.
Now, with the ball on the wing, he guards the near post; when the cross comes, he attacks it; and on a counter he backpedals facing the play, without stopping.
The players’ feet follow this too: they point where the player is running and, for goalkeepers, always face the ball.
The dressing room remembers
Cohesion, promises and identity: why a united team wins games it should lose on paper.
Team cohesion grows with a stable squad, morale, a named captain and promises kept; it drops with unresolved issues and lots of new faces.
A united group performs better mentally and defends better. For small clubs, it is how you stand up to the big ones.
Every promise is recorded. Breaking one costs you for weeks.
